Affiliated to the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations
Sacred Heart School is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, Pragati House, 3rd Floor, 47–48 Nehru Place, New Delhi – 110 019.
The council for conducting Grade 10 & 12 examinations in India was established in 1958 by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. In 1973 the council became an independent body for conducting public examinations in India and was renamed the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). The curriculum of the ISCE is akin to that of the GCSE, the British system of public examinations. The ICSE examination therefore has extensive and wide recognition in foreign countries.
From Montessori foundations to the ISC
Kindergarten Curriculum
The Kindergarten curriculum provides a strong foundation for lifelong learning through a joyful, child-centred and activity-based approach. At our school the curriculum is taught using Montessori methods, where children learn through hands-on activities, exploration and self-directed learning.
It focuses on the holistic development of every child by nurturing language skills, early numeracy, environmental awareness, creativity, social and emotional growth, and physical development. Storytelling, rhymes, music, art, games and practical learning experiences make learning enjoyable and meaningful. The curriculum encourages curiosity, confidence, independence, communication and a lifelong love for learning, while helping children develop good values and positive habits in a safe and stimulating environment.
Primary Curriculum (Classes I – V)
At the Primary stage, subject areas dealt with are English, Tamil (second language), Mathematics, Environmental Studies (EVS), Science, Social Studies, Computer Studies, General Knowledge, and Arts & Physical Education.
English is treated as the first language and presented in a manner that helps enrich the learner’s LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) skills. The curriculum is designed in collaboration with the syllabus of the University of Cambridge International Examinations (YLE Examinations) and CISCE to mould learners to think critically and respond sensibly. The Young Learners English Tests (YLE) is a suite of English language tests specially designed for children in Primary, provided by Cambridge English Language Assessment.
The curriculum is largely an activity-based teaching–learning process beyond textbooks. Educational trips, club activities, book fairs, competitions, seminars, various competitive examinations, language / computer / mathematics lab activities and computer education are incorporated as part of the syllabus.
Middle School (Grades VI – VIII)
Learners in the age group of 11–14 have a smooth transition from Primary to Middle School. The curriculum includes English, Computer Science, General Science, Mathematics, General Knowledge, Social Studies, and Drawing & Painting.
Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as sports & games, debates, quiz competitions, seminars, dramatics, language & mathematics lab activities, educational trips, competitive examinations, art & craft, music & dance and study camps are part of the programme. The academic year is divided into two terms with provisions for continuous evaluation to check students’ progress, enabling teachers to reinforce learning as well as build resilient, independent learners.
Sacred Heart International School offers an enriched curriculum based on the objectives of the CISCE, with a multidimensional approach catering to each child’s unique learning style. Innovative assignments integrated with all subjects are interspersed within the curriculum to give a gamut of exposure, and projects are conducted to extend and synthesise knowledge using inductive, deductive and analytical skills.
High School (Grades IX – XII)
The syllabus followed in Grades IX & X is based on the syllabus designed and developed by the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations. The course leads to the Grade X examination known as the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE).
The syllabus of Grades XI & XII is based on the council examination Indian School Certificate (ISC). The course syllabus is similar to the internationally recognised British Exam Board IGCSE. The curriculum includes English as a first language, and various extra and co-curricular activities form part of the curriculum.
